I have a strong passion for reading! It was my focus in college for two of my degrees; I'm always reading as many books as I can keep track of at once without over whelming myself. Thankfully, this passion has trickled down to both of my sons!! Warms my heart and soul!
One of the things I have always done with my boys is read to them. When I say always, I mean always. I used to sit on my bed when I was pregnant with my first son and read out loud to him. When I was pregnant with my second son, the only difference was I had a little guy sitting next to me as I read out loud, to my not yet born child and the little guy sitting next to me!
As they grew, I continued this habit! We read everything we could get our hands on. We loved going to the library and had to carry a laundry basket because we always came out with the maximum number of books allowed at checkout!
Neither of my children read at an early age (contrary to everything I had read) but what I have found is they both are as passionate about books as I am!
They are no longer small...far from it as a 6th grader and a Junior in high school and yet, they still ask me to read to them, and I do. Our latest reading Quest, The Top 100 Children's Picture Books . As a family, we sat around one night a week and read. Each of us read one book out loud to the others. As my children are older we took it up a notch and whom ever was the reader had to lead a family discussion about the book by asking three questions:
1) What did you like most about the book
2)What would you ask or say to the author if you met him/her and
3) Why do you think it made the top 100?
My boys were so excited about what we were doing that when we read the last book, they immediately starting searching for our next reading quest!!!
We are getting ready to begin making our way through
The Top 100 Children's Novels list!
Happy Reading Friends!
